Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is proper attire for Carolina Ballroom Dance Club?

A: Women usually opt for dress slacks, short dresses, or even long dresses depending on personal preference. Men usually dress in casual shirts and pants. During holidays or special events, men may opt for ties.

Q: What kind of shoes are appropriate?

A: Most dancers have special dance shoes with suede soles. If you are a newcomer to dancing, usually shoes with leather soles are best. Rubber soles may stick to the floor and other shoes may be too slick or cumbersome. Your dance instructor may have further recommendations.

Q: Do I need a partner?

A: No. Couples and singles attend CBDC. Most dancers prefer to dance with many different partners.

Q: May I bring children to a Carolina Ballroom Dance?

A: Because of safety concerns, please do not bring children to Carolina Ballroom dances.

Q: What kind of music is played at the dances?

A: Most of the music is geared toward the basic 6 dances - waltz, foxtrot, tango,  rumba, cha cha and swing. Other dances may include mambo, samba, and bolero. Occasionally, a Viennese waltz or Quickstep will be played.

Q: Is it appropriate for women to ask men to dance at Carolina Ballroom?

A: Yes, we encourage women to ask men to dance at our dances. We are a club and therefore, it is entirely acceptable to ask another club member to dance.
